A Note from
the Red Diner
Today we
have 2 new hires. Employees come and go in this business. It seems as though our customers just get
used to having people around; they start to joke and laugh with the staff and
then we lose them and have to find new employees. The turnover in this business
fairly consistent, and when we lose key staff we sometimes can lose business. We
need to always be looking for staff the RIGHT staff and when the right people
do come around; we have to hire them
even though we may not have been expecting them.
When we have more than one new hire
we try to start our new staff out on slower evenings. Especially when we are
down a key staff member and we have limited staff available to train. We also
have new staffers come in during an extra shift to tour the establishment,
learn a bit about how we communicate and how we conduct business. There is one
component of the training and learning process that our establishment has not
had to be concerned with and that is training for the POS system. Since we have
2TouchPOS our hiring manager assigned the new employees with the task of
learning about the Point of Sale System even before their first shift. Our 2 new
employees are coming into their first shift with 4 hours of online training
that centers around practicing the basic components of their position and how
to use the software to complete their shift tasks.
To our
business this better prepares our employees for their first day enabling them
to “learn our processes” more quickly and start earning tips by their second or
third shift. Having a Point of Sale
system with eLearning helps our business to meet the challenges in this
business when we experience turn over, and provides an in depth demonstration
of the software and the unique features that are available. Our software has a
lot to offer and we didn’t really fully understand the 2TouchPOS had so much to
offer until we used it and completed the training over time. The magnitude of
what the 2TouchPOS software can do wasn’t fully realized until we had
implemented it and used it for about a year. Software that offers so many
attributes takes a while to get acquainted with! We don’t expect to have our
staff know the system and everything it can do in just a short period of time. That’s
why the way 2TouchPOS offers information has been great for our establishment
and our staff.
When we
train our new staff the hardest part is working the milkshake machine. We
actually use real icecream, and the icecream can be really hard when we start
each shake. Hey if that’s the worst of what we need to teach our new staff then
we know we can deal with the employee turnover that we experience in this
business. Having 2TouchPOS allows us to teach the day-to-day shift activities to
our staff so that they can get started earning their tips as quickly as
possible. Later on we demonstrate more
complex processes that we can use with the staff to measure the data so that we
can plan our direction for managing staff and profits.
